Getting the most out of your trip is often a question of achieving a balance between as many awesome experiences as possible, and also taking time to pause and relax far from the stresses and worries of everyday life. The biggest land mammal in the world, king of the jungle and many more, six feet in front of you with no cage, barrier or interlocutor is something which should stir, emote and bring joy to your soul.  Feel the heartbeat of the African bush and enjoy slowing down for a few days while you catch your breath and immerse yourself in beauty and wonder. Here is a list of a few essential tips that will help you get the most out of your trip.

Before the trip

-Research and decide what wildlife you want to see (not all parks offer all species), what kind of wilderness experience you want. Maybe you want an intimacy with gorilla, a safari or you are particularly interested in Bird-life and also outline what sort of accommodation you are looking for.

-Do some homework on your tour operator, looking at what trips they offer, read reviews and see what previous customs say. Of course, every operator will tell you that they are the best. Read in details at the comments about specific things, such as the driver-guides, the vehicles, the accommodation before you talk to your operator.

-Talk to an expert from your chosen tour operator who has been to the areas you want to visit and who knows a range of products, so they can steer you to the experience that will best suit you.

On the trip

Be active when the animals are, as a general rule, animals are active in the morning and the evening; the midday sun is simply too hot for them to do very much else other than lay in the shade. This is why you’ll quickly discover that most safari days are broken into two – an early morning game drive setting off just before the sun has come up, and another beginning around 4:30 p.m

-Ask questions; your tracker and safari guide will be with you for each safari outing to point out the animals and teach you about the African wildlife and your surroundings, you will certainly learn more and gain a greater understanding of the bush if you ask lots of questions and take an interest in the activities.

-Don’t hurry; smaller details can add so much to your African safari experience, sometimes the unexpected can happen. if you slow down and spend some time simply watching an empty watering hole, or sitting in a bird hide – you never know what animals are just around the corner! Be sure to crouch down, look at the tracks, and rub leaves between your fingers to release aromas and for the brave check how warm the elephant dung is to see how recently it was deposited…

-Disconnect, take your sense of adventure and don’t even think about Wi-Fi. Put your phone and watch away, take as many photos as possible and immerse yourself in nature, culture and in new experiences. . Make sure your camera or phone goes home packed with images to remind you of your experience.
