The 14th Kwita Izina (2018)- Baby Gorilla Naming Ceremony

Celebrate Rwanda’s conservation success story with us and help protect our wildlife and biodiversity for future generations.

Kwita Izina, a uniquely Rwandan event, was introduced in 2005 with the aim of creating awareness of conservation efforts for the endangered mountain gorilla. 23 infant mountain gorillas will be named this year. Community projects in Kitabi Sector, Nyamagabe District and Ndego Sector, Kayonza District will be launched on 27, July and 5, September respectively. In Kitabi Sector RDB has constructed .

The government of Rwanda, through the Rwanda Development Board and in collaboration with conservation partners, private sectors stakeholders and local communities, has achieved remarkable success in protecting and growing the endangered mountain gorilla population and its habitat. Rwanda’s naming ceremony tradition has been adapted as a celebration of this success in the national flagship event known as Kwita Izina.

Kwita Izina was introduced in 2005 with aim of creating greater awareness of conservation efforts and thanking communities for their on-going valuable support of these initiatives; now the most important annual event on Rwanda’s calendar, it is attended by around thirty thousand community members and three thousand international, regional and local participants each year.

The 14th Kwita Izina will take place in Kinigi, at the foothills of Volcanoes National Park,  Norhern province on Friday 7th September 2018.                     

To date, 258 mountain gorilla babies have been named in the past 13 ceremonies and Kwita Izina is fast becoming known as Africa’s leading diologue on conservation and tourism.The theme of this year’s event is ‘Conservation is Life’ .

Besides gorilla naming, a series of activities will take place to make your safari more informative and interesting. Some activities will take place before the gorilla naming while others in the due course. Travelers are allowed to take park in any of these activities, which make their safari more interesting. Among the events that will take place include:

FAMILIARIZATION TOURS 31th August-8th September

One of the key activities for the 14th Kwita Izina is the hosted familiarization trip for international tour operators and media. It is our opportunity to showcase Rwanda’s diverse tourism attractions and unique cultural heritage that makes Rwanda a must-see destination. The itinerary includes cultural heritage attractions such as the King’s Palace in Nyanza, Nyungwe, Akagera and Volcanoes National Park as well as Lake Kivu.

CONSERVATION EXHIBITION 3th -4th September

The Kwita Izina Conservation Exhibition is a two days event that will be held alongside the Conversation on Conservation forum in Kigali. The exhibition showcases Rwanda’s remarkable achievements in conservation activities through displays of educational materials and other tourism products which make Rwanda a destination to visit.

Conversation on Conservation is a two days annual conference held in Kigali with delegates attending from all over the world. It is important forum bringing together leading global experts to debate Africa’s common conservation challenges and find solutions to preserve ecosystems for future generations.

NAMING CEREMONY 7th September

Join us for the ultimate celebration of life as newborn baby gorillas are named during the 14th hosting of Kwita Izina in Kinigi, Volcanoes National Park. The name attributed to a baby gorilla plays a significant role in the ongoing program of monitoring each individual gorilla in its family group and habitat. This year we expect to name 18 babies.

 

IGITARAMO CULTURAL CEREBRATORY DINNER 7th September

The closing Kwita Izina event is Igitaramo; a culture celebratory dinner.The objective of this fundraising dinner is to support Rwanda’s ongoing successful conservation projects specifically ‘ Expansion of the Gorilla Habitat’. Celebrate Rwanda’s conservation success story with us and help protect our wildlife and biodiversity for future generations. The celebration is a uniquely Rwandan dinner with great entertainment and local style cuisine on the shores of idyllic Lake Kivu in Rubavu.
