Rwanda has more than 800 bird species including 44 Albertine rift endemics. Our experience in the ecosystem of the rain forest and savannah provides a fascinating birding tour to ensure ever lasting memories.
Akagera National park has over 525 bird species and Nyungwe National Park has approximately 310 bird species with attractive trails that are a home to more than two dozen species that are endemic to the Albertine Rift and many other unique to the African montane forest habitat.
1 Arrival in Rwanda via Kigali International Airport
On arrival at the Kigali International Airport you will be received by our birder for hotel transfer in Kigali.
2 Birding Nyarutarama and Akagera National Park
After breakfast, you will visit the Nyarutarama Lake in Kigali bird species and also more birds will be spotted in vegetation, woodlands in the surrounding area. The waders on the lake you will most likely see in plentiful include: White-faced Whistling Duck, Hottentot Teal, African Spoonbill, Common Moorhen, Black-headed Heron, Squacco Heron, Black Crake, and later set off to Akagera National Park that boasts with over 500 bird species with a night in one of the park lodges.
3 Day 3 – Full day birding in the Akagera National Park
Up by 6am, have a quick breakfast and head out into the park. Spend the first half of the day birding in the southern lower regions, especially around lakes Ihema and Birengero that are productive for swamp specials such as the African Jacana, Swamp Flycatcher, Long-toed Lapwing, African Fish Eagle, and migrants such as Wood Sandpiper, Yellow Wagtails, Common Sandpiper and many more Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge.
4 Half day birding and Boat cruise on Lake Ihema
>After breakfast, you will head to the northern part wetlands with breathtaking scenery which are known to offer the best chance to glace at the rare Shoebill. After lunch you will set out for a late afternoon relaxation boat trip on Lake Ihema. Meals and accommodation at Akagera Game Lodge.
5 Transfer to Nyungwe National Park
After breakfast, we will drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park with an excellent opportunity to see the Albertine Rift endemics . The forest has over 310 bird species. Nyungwe also has one of the highest diversity of primate species in a single location,
You will make a stopover in Nyungwe town for a lunch break and visit pay a visit to the cultural corridors in Nyanza and overnight at Nyungwe Top View Hotel.
6 Birding in Nyungwe: Gisakura – Karamba – Kamiranzovu Marsh
After breakfast, you will visit Kamiranzovu Marsh that is very productive for the Grauer’s Swamp Warbler, and the exploration of the birding trails and tracks in the area around Gisakura will reward with plenty of Nyungwe Forest specials including Albertine Rift endemics birds and monkey species. Meals and accommodation at Nyungwe Top View Hotel.
7 Birding in Nyungwe: Uwinka – Mt. Bigugu trail
You will set out on a full day hike along the Bigugu trails .The trail is known to produce many Albertine Rift endemics and some of those often recorded on this trek include: Neumann’s Warbler, Rwenzori Apalis, Mountain Masked Apalis, Red-faced woodland Warbler, Rwenzori Turaco, Strip-breasted Tit, Blue-headed Sunbird, Rwenzori Batis, Regal Sunbird, etc… Meals and accommodation at Nyungwe Top View Hotel.
8 Canopy walkway and transfer to Kigali
After breakfast, you will head to the Uwinka and Rangiro roads which offer access to good views of birds of Regal sunbirds, Handasome Francolin , Red -throated Alethe and many more. After lunch, we will drive back to Kigali.
